Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES) Symptoms

There is a commonly known list of "Red Flag" signs and symptoms which may indicate CES.

It is not uncommon to have lower back pain however, if this is associated with any of the following "red flags", Cauda Equina Syndrome could be suspected and should be discussed with your doctor.

If you have a combination of any of the symptoms below, there is a chance you could be suffering from the onset of Cauda Equina Syndrome.  Seek medical advice immediately.

Saddle anaesthesia

Lack of sensation or numbness in the saddle area (around genitals and bottom).

Lower limb weakness or pain

This could include pain radiating into one or both legs, difficulty mobilising or foot drop.

Bladder problems

Lack of sensation can cause incontinence or the inability to empty the bladder.

Bowel problems

Lack of sensation can cause constipation or the inability to control bowel movements.

Sexual problems

Lack of sensation can cause impotence, the inability to attain arousal or climax.
